You can repel certain bugs by using specific scents. While it depends on the bug, you can keep them at bay using tea tree oil, peppermint, and lavender. If you have bedbugs at home, you may believe you can get rid of them using specific smells. While bedbugs will steer clear of specific smells, you have to know exactly which smells will work and which will not. For instance, you’ll find that bedbugs will not approach pheromones released by baby bedbugs. Bedbugs release this smell so the male bedbugs will stay away from the nymphs and not mate with them.
The only problem is female bedbugs will not stay away. When searching for bedbug repellents, there is a good chance that many products will contain pheromones. Furthermore, some people believe that essential oils can repel bedbugs. Just recently, the US Department of Agriculture carried out a study to determine whether essential oils were effective for this purpose. The results were mixed.
The study concluded that bedbugs were not repelled by the smell of these essential oils. Nevertheless, they did have an impact on the bug’s body. The most effective essential oils were silicone oil, paraffin oil, spearmint oil, and blood orange oil. Still, the effectiveness was very limited.
